Sheryl Underwood Slams Natural Hair!!

Sheryl Underwood Slams Natural Hair!

The CBS show The Talk that aired Aug. 30, Underwood spoke against "nappy" "Afro" hair during a discussion about Heidi Klum saving her children's hair after it had been cut. Klum's children with ex-husband Seal have "huge Afros," as she described them. Upon hearing that Klum saves their hair, Underwood responded, Why would you save Afro hair?" She went on to imply that nobody wants that type of hair, saying that you never hear of a woman in a hair shop asking for that "curly, nappy, beady" hair. Co-host Sarah Gilbert replied by saying that she, too sometimes saves her children's hair, and Underwood interjected, saying that it was "probably some beautiful, long, silky stuff," implying that type of hair is  more desirable and worth saving. Here is a clip from the incident.

Please share your thoughts!

  1. the clip of Sheryl Underwood is a disappointment & truly sad to know that on such national TV she insulted black hair by saying it not worthy to be saved by anyone... but white silky hair is... is this exceptable... I see the clip for what it is another kick in the gut... by our own

    1. I get so upset when I hear Ms. Underwood put herself down. In her comedic routines she often refers to herself as being so ugly, she looks like Wesley Snipes. I believe she has a very poor image of herself and her people. I believe that's the root of it.

    2. I agree, it's amazing that people with low self worth often do not see the beauty of themselves. I find it ironic that she sits there with a big ole wig on her head and literally debases her own culture. Like you said its her having this poor image of herself and her people. I will say this though, she is not my people. If you are against the uplifting of your own kind then you are not from them only a disgruntled bystander.

  3. Little does she know people actually do want that natural look, but you know what I never liked Ms. Underwood, she isn't funny to me at all, and she is loud for no reason. Girl keep your wigs, and unhealthy looking hair underneath. I have nothing against people with perms but i've seen her snatch her wig off and i'm gonna need her to do that hair before she worries about nappy hair.

  4. If Afro Divas is to remain positive, why are you focusing on Ms. Underwood's comments. Please remember, you are going to her, she is not coming to you or your website. Obviously, Ms. Underwood is not in favor of natural hair, because she is not wearing any. Therefore, she is being true to her self. I don't believe she needed to describe natural hair the way that she did because I do believe she was being quite negative. She has her opinion and she stated. I am glad I can do the same. Unfortunately, this website is my only platform. I appreciate it too!

  5. All I thought when she said it was, damn, I went to 3 cities looking for a afro ponytail. They had them, but not my color so somebody other than me looking for them too. I agree, she isn't funny and is just loud for no reason. She is such an embarrassment when men come on that show.

  6. She is a Comedian. If it were from one of the others, I would see your dismay. Afro hair is used for toupee's. Calm down everyone, White people know how to take something and put it on blast if it is negative. But, then again she is also a republican... what does she know. lol.

    1. I thought the same thing..."republican" and while it does not necessarily mean anything in regards to hair it means something in regards to (some of) the way that she thinks. She is entitled to her opinion yes but I will not take it to heart because I know what I have and I know how I feel about it. Her ignorant comments do not make or break me and I can still hold my head high when I walk down the street. What someone else chooses to do with their hair, person or business is of no concern of mine.

  7. Sheryl Underwood is a masterful comedian communicator. She was talking the real talk, the real thoughts of so many people who do criticize the natural look. I must admit, the main reason I am embracing my natural look is to protect my hair and scalp from damage. But, none of us should be surprised by what she exposed on the popular tv program. People who appreciate the natural look must be sought out. They may not be the richest most popular people we see on tv daily. The natural look is indeed a personal preference for personal reason. But we live in a commercial fake it till you make world. Be real to yourself, for yourself.
